Letters to college coaches need to be strategic and showcase your strengths and maturity as a student-athlete.
Golf Example Letter

Dear Coach _______________________,
My name is ******* and I am a 16 year old sophomore golfer at Yuma Catholic High School (Yuma, AZ) I am writing to express my interest in playing golf for ______________________ beginning in the fall of 2014.
In my freshman year of high school I saw success in golf and basketball. On the golf course I played number 1 on the varsity team with a 9-hole stroke average of 36, finished runner-up individually at the Arizona 3A High School State Championship with rounds of 68-72, and was the Yuma Sun Region Player of the Year for 2011.
I have split my time between the golf course and the basketball court. This summer I have been traveling with the varsity team at Yuma Catholic High School for summer basketball tournaments in between my rigorous AJGA golf tournament schedule. Last year on the freshman basketball team, I averaged <list any stats that are good here>.
Academically, I am taking a very strong course load with three of my classes being at the College AP level and the others above level. I currently rank 1st in my class with a 4.62 GPA. I am also registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Over the course of the next few months, I intend to keep you apprised of my tournament results. I have attached my detailed resume for your review.
I look forward to hearing from you Coach ______________________________. I truly have a burning desire to play college golf and would love to be a part of the ____________________________________program.
Regards,
